Josh McDaniels, former Raiders Head Coach, was the first to go this 2023-2024 NFL season. Here are our predictions for the next NFL coach to go, based on team performance and our own analysis.
We’ve put together a list of the 6 NFL head coaches that we think may be up next after Josh McDaniels getting fired this last week.
Josh McDaniels was the first coach fired of the season, and it was a little surprising. We know that the fans had been calling for it for a few weeks, and anytime the fans get really frustrated that can be a sign that a coach is soon to go, if they don’t turn the team around.
1. Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Coordinator – Matt Canada
Although the Steelers are 5-3, the Pittsburgh fans apparently want Matt Canada to go. I do think this one’s a toss up but there is a chance that they do decide to let him go, especially if the Steelers either don’t make the playoffs or lose first game in the playoffs.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach – Tom Bowles
The Buccaneers fans wanted Todd Bowles gone last year. Personally, I do like Todd Bowles and think he’s got a lot of good things going for the team, but the defense this year has arguably been weaker than expected, and the offense doesn’t look all that different than last year under Byron Leftwich, who did end up taking the boot. I predict that if Tampa Bay doesn’t make the playoffs, the Tampa Bay ownership will let Todd Bowles go.
3. Chicago Bears Head Coach – Matt Eberflus
This ones a no brainer, and maybe they will give him another chance to get a new quarterback. The Bears could definitely use a stronger QB, after looking at Justin Fields career record of 7-26, and it looks like Chicago will choose to move on after this season.
4. Green Bay Packers Head Coach – Matt LaFleur
The Packers last few seasons have been okay, last year was especially disappointing. This year has been all the more disappointing so far for many lifelong Packers fans. I would think 2 seasons in a row will put Matt LaFleur on the hot seat, although it may be a better idea to let the GM go since it seems like a lot of the Packers issues lie in the player contract moves, in my opinion.
5. New York Giants Head Coach – Brian Daboll
Although he is not immediately on the hot seat, if the Giants don’t turn it around, I have a feeling that management will at least consider replacing him in the coming offseason.
6. Los Angeles Chargers Head Coach – Brandon Staley
The Chargers look to be off to a rough start and not necessarily gaining any momentum. It’s been a few seasons where they haven’t had much going and this year they look particularly weak. This is an issue at a time when the division is the least competitive that its been in a while.
If the Chargers can’t get something going soon, Brandon Staley’s job will be in extremely hot water and may not even make it through the season.
Honorable Mentions
Washington Commanders Head Coach -Ron Rivera: Could be at risk, but they put up a fight last week against the Eagles and seem to be building around a rookie quarterback, a sign that in my opinion he might get another year.
Tennessee Titans Head Coach – Mike Vrabel: This coach should probably be 7th in our predictions, but if the Titans can get to the playoffs he probably will end up safe from the hot seat for this season.
