With Dave Canales accepting the head coach position for the Carolina Panthers, the Buccaneers need an intense energy like Moore.
First off, I think the hire of Dave Canales was a brilliant move by the Panthers. Canales single-handedly turned the Tampa Bay offense around in this 2023 season. Fans were expecting a rebuild year without Tom Brady, but Dave Canales shoed us all otherwise.
Now that Canales has moved on, Tampa has a huge hole to fill. The Buccaneers need to find someone similarly aggressive, determined, and willing to push their offense to the limit.
Kellen Moore for Offensive Coordinator
Here are three reasons I think Kellen Moore is a great option.
He’s aggressive
Tampa needs an aggressive gameplan to take down certain teams. This is a concept Baker Mayfield certainly understood in their divisional round loss to the Lions. Mayfield went over to the receivers, and said “hey, they can’t guard us, lets go tear them up!”, or something along those lines.
Ironically enough, I can’t remember a deep ball being thrown in the second half of the game. A game plan like this would have clearly worked better against the Lions, in my opinion.
Seeing Baker’s aggression on offense indicated to me that he wanted to tear that Lions defense up. However, the play calls were extremely conservative for such a high-stakes game.
Todd Bowles liked that Dave Canales was a little more conservative with the plays than other offensive coordinators would have been. Personally, I think Kellen Moore will bring a similar energy to his offensive strategy and play-calling.
Todd Bowles needs to be balanced out
The moment when Todd Bowles did not call timeout with 34 seconds left to force the Lions to kick a 48 yard field goal will haunt me for years to come. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers front office ought to step in and push Bowles to hire Kellen Moore.
I think that Moore will provide a better balance for the Buccaneers. Todd Bowles has a very mellow, calm composure during games, and I think Moore is the guy to bring the energy. He’s got great offensive strategy and the drive to make teams win.
Coaching makes or breaks a season
Chargers had head coaching issues this season, as we all learned. In my opinion, Justin Herbert is not a quarterback that goes and wins the game when it’s on the line. While the players are a significant portion of the seasons outcome, the coach also plays a significant role.
During Kellen Moore’s time at Dallas, the Cowboys won a playoff game and I think arguably the game went better with Kellen Moore calling the plays, rather than Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys are a great team, but the person making the play calls has to bring energy, strategy, and focus to the field. This is what makes a successful offense.
Kellen Moore has already interviewed with the Eagles, where he could be a great fit. This is, of course, given that Sirianni wants to be aggressive on offense next season.
Final Thoughts
I really think Moore is the best option on the market right now for the Tampa Bay offensive coordinator position. He has a good track record, brings the heat, and has a passion for winning, which is what fans want.
If Mike Vrabel or Pete Carroll does not land a head coaching gig, I think either of these coaches would be a great alternative for the offensive coordinator position.
